October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month - Join us October 13

6 Oct 2026 11:24 AM | Natalie Meier (Milwaukee County) (Administrator)

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an annual opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting ourselves, our organizations, and our communities from cyber threats.

Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. Phishing, ransomware, malware, data breaches, and other cyber incidents can affect organizations of every size—and strong preparedness depends not only on technology, but also on the people and organizations responsible for communicating and coordinating when something goes wrong.

Throughout October, individuals and organizations are encouraged to strengthen their cybersecurity practices by:

  • Using strong, unique passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication

  • Keeping devices and software updated

  • Learning to recognize phishing and other common cyber threats

  • Backing up important information

  • Providing cybersecurity awareness and training for staff

  • Reviewing plans for how your organization would respond to and communicate during a cyber incident

Put Preparedness Into Practice: Join Us October 13

There are still seats available for the Communicating Throughout a Cyber Event Workshop on Tuesday, October 13, from 1:00–4:00 PM at Paul Davis Restoration.

This SWHSP workshop takes a non-technical approach to cyber preparedness, focusing on something every organization may have to navigate during a cyber incident: how to communicate effectively when normal systems, information, or communication channels may be disrupted.

Participants will have an opportunity to think through communication challenges, coordination needs, and practical considerations before an incident occurs.

The workshop is free and open to both SWHSP members and non-members.

If your organization has a role in emergency management, public safety, healthcare, government, nonprofit services, communications, continuity, or community response, this is a great opportunity to strengthen your preparedness while connecting with regional partners.

Seats are still available—register today!
